Re: What RPG System Do You Use

As always, please take what I'm about to say as the venting rant it is...

Man... I want pull my hair out sometimes in frustration when I visit these boards. Posting a poll of what game system you use to play Star Wars, when for years there was a big anti-d20 symbol on the main page.

I LOVE the deckplans this site creates, but the anti-d20 'd6 or death' crap wears really REALLY thin.

I'm going to serve up a heaping helping of reality. D6 is dead. Dead, defunct, the company is not producing anything any more. And, no one is making 8-tracks either.

What's left as far as actual active Star Wars production is D20.

The truth is for the vast majority of play, the game system has very little to do with the game. It's the Game Master, not the game, and to a lesser degree, the group dynamic.

Is D20 ideal for the Star Wars setting? I don't think so. Was D6? Well, I played D6 for a few months and HATED every moment of it. It's very likely that it was due to the stupid guy running the game, but that doesn't matter, it only illustrates my point. Even knowing D20 isn't perfect for the genre, it's still pretty good, and our D20 Star Wars group had a good deal of fun.

Now, I'm running a Serenity game, in the Serenity system, which someone forgot to put rules into, but is still a very fun game, regardless of the game system.

If you don't mind number crunching, I highly recommend Hero Games (Champions). It'd probably handle Star Wars great, and the system is still supported and constantly improving.

I'd use some quote like "You're sad devotion to a dying game system hasn't conjured up new product" or some such, but we all know that would immediately be followed by a force choke, and the icy "I find your lack of faith disturbing" from Frank. emoticon

well, I will admit that I do not play the RPG's and d6 or d20 makes no difference to me, but ultimately I agree with Lynn on her sentiment. the dice rolls make not the game, the story and participation make the game.

Lynn, as much as I loathe D20 and love D6, I must agree with you. D6 is dead and it isn't coming back.

Well personally i like D6 (with some modifications), mainly due the part that i prefer the multiple Die approach to Skillchecks. D20 is okay (with modifications) if you play Heroic Campaigns, but for gritty Games D6 is a lot better in my Opinion. Though i play it with more fixed "Strength" and Weapon Damage scores.

Hmm, well SW D20 may not be dead but it's definately in a coma...

Star Wars Miniatures and TCG seem to be the only things WOTC is concentrating on at the moment. Maybe in a few months we'll be debating on which system is *deader* emoticon

Nevertheless, I agree that the gamemaster is the most important factor in the success of any game.

Im fairly new into the whole PnP rpg. PLayed dnd when it was in D6 format and i could not wrap my head around it. I find the D20 easier to understand.

I got the D20 SW books last year and sat on them because i stink at making up stories and holding adventures. Finally dusted off my books about a month ago and have been hosting a game that has been running wather well.

I also use some of the older books to get ideas and more weapons and such to give to people. The more items people can choose from the more it seems like a real world.

I've run a few short SW campaigns using a homebrewed system developed from Fudge. Currently I'm not running any games, though.

The story and how it is told, so the roleplaying is the most important. The system can just support this.
Personaly i like systems which give you some freedom when it comes to character creation. And that is the main reason why i play D6 when it comes to Star Wars. The level and feat system is nice when you play DnD, but it fails with Star Wars. I also like the wild die (i know some hate that the most). with this you can do just those things which make a good SW story, not always, but sometimes the force is with you. Still i also like it the most when no dice roll is necessary and everything can be handeld by roleplaying and logic.
