It's time to build

Hey Everyone,

Since I've been back for about a year now and I think it's pretty evident that I have decided to stick around, I think it's time that we start plotting our course for the future.

With that in mind, I would like to start the design process for the new gallery, where we can showcase our work, both the finished items and the work in progress.

I would like to tackle this in stages.

First, let's draft versions of what we think the pages should look like and design the user experience of navigating the gallery and how it would be organized.

What we don't want to do is replicate older sites that have a dated or obsolete aesthetic with potentially questionable site content that is irrelevant to the intention of the site itself... like for example The Deckplans Alliance

I'm thinking that the site should be viewable from mobile devices as well as laptops and desktops.

I am also thinking of a system where we have more of an interactive approach to the navigation process, like scrolling thumbnail cards and that kind of thing.

I am hoping that SWDA members will contribute to this process and offer ideas for all of us to share.

okay, I'll start the ball rolling by posting a link to;

w3schools.com

This is an amazing resource with tools and tips on how to create and optimize webpages.

The first element I would like to see in our gallery is a carousel type set up for each category of item in our inventory.

The examples and coding tutorials can be found here;

Slideshow / Carousel

So, here is an example of a slideshow, which is pretty barebones. I would prefer it to be flashier, but that is detail that can be added.

I think it would be good to go with something that works with other sites like the Star Trek: Starship Tactical Combat Simulator site which had multiple options for organization. For instance, the main page for the gallery can have the following options for sorting:

Sort by manufacturer
Sort by starship type
Sort by size
Sort by scale

And then depending on which one you click it would organize them in that manner.

I also think it would be good to have a small menu on the right of each page of the starship deckplan with callouts that when you hover over them will cause the component called out to be circled. This is a useful feature that I as a gamemaster would be extremely happy to have since it would allow me to narrate my games more smoothly. For instance, if I was running combat and the ship was turning to port relative to the enemy fighter, and then the ship got hit, I could hover my mouse over the components till one on the portside lit up and then say something to the tune of, "Suddenly a shot slams into your vessel. Warning klaxons sound as the engineering panel tells you that the acceleration compensator has been damaged and is now offline. All rolls to operate the ship will suffer a -2 penalty until you can fix it!"

And of course, I'd like to have a roleplaying capsule available under the ship's deckplan. It would be good to include a disclaimer if we're modifying the plans in any way so people won't get confused. The HWK-290 for instance needs to be changed from 2 crew, 6 passengers to just 2 crew, as well as its length gone down from 29 meters to 15.5 meters. I'd be happy to write up gaming stats in multiple systems (D6, D20, EotE, GURPS, Pathfinder) if anyone wants me to.

These are my personal wishlist for that part of the site, and I'd be happy to help in any way if needed.

Great suggestions!

That idea for hover over boxes with stats and details is awesome, and is actually fairly simple to do believe it or not. It just needs to be organized properly so that it's easy to use and not intrusive to the rest of the site.

I think we would also benefit from an actual database for ships and parts.

Ultimately my point for the gallery would be a clean interface without a lot of clutter. If we have clearly defined aesthetics and navigational tools, then we can add additional functions as time progresses.

Sort by artist.
Sort by canon.

Which reminds me, we really do need to separate the Lucasfilm and Disney continuities into different sections. The way thing are set up now, with Disney-canon taking precedence in every section, this forum is basically just another Disney-canon fansite with only a few older ships buried in there somewhere. It doesn't leave any space for those of who don't enjoy what the Mouse has done with Star Wars to do our deckplanning thing.

Good suggestions. We definitely want to be able to make it easier for people to find what they're looking for and more search options are always better in my opinion.

Unfortunately, I don't understand this point. To me canon is material that is represented on screen. I don't see a distinction between pre and post Disney in this regard.

Are we looking in different places, because I really don't see a lot of sequel era ships in the forum here, compared to all the EU, Legends, OT and Prequel stuff.

Re: It's time to build

As far as getting the forum running on mobile.. Runboard should have done that a decade ago. PHPbb has been mobile friendly for at LEAST a decade. You never should have been forced to request members to create 1024x thumbnails in the first place. Now, even the gallery is infested with thumbnails. Runboard also should have set default image thumbnails by screensize at least a decade ago. Another feature that was built in to PHPbb a LONG long time ago...

I think it would be easy enough to provide a (searchable) field for canon RESOURCE(s) for each item. I note that you mentioned that 'canon is represented by material on screen'. If that IS your goal, then you need to mention up front that you ONLY consider the on-screen Star Wars movies as canon. I don't think that that's quite what you meant, though, and it actually sounds a bit silly. A lot of people consider the Star Wars Cinematic Universe as canon, which includes ILM models, production notes, storyboards and etc. I don't see any reason not list comic book, cartoons and other references as well as sources.

Many people despise what DIsney does when they buy a franchise, so I don't see the issue with letting people sort out assets by the original series.. or whatever. Personlly, I haven't even watched any of the new movies. I know the storyline that George Lucas hinted at being in his safe some 45 years ago, and I've got no reason to go watch some bastardized, warped and watered down #Disney b.s. that has nothing to do with the way it was intended.

None of that necessarily means that the tech used in the Disney movies should be discounted, though. So long as they followed the 'laws' of the Star Wars universe as they are understood, I don't see any reason to outright BAN DIsney tech from the RPG assets. I mean, there's no reason Disney can't be a legitimate creator for Star Wars assets (even if some people hate their content). At the same time, I wouldn't be ONE BIT surprised if some of the 'stupid crap' that Disney threw in to their movies fell well outside the boundaries of what IS the laws of the Star Wars Cinematic Universe. Hey, perhaps you could use a special red warning theme for the sub-forum that lists ANY content that doesn't follow the laws of the Cinematic and/or RPG universe.

I've been involved in Internet and Network Administration for decades, so I can offer a bit of advice there, if you have any direct questions. YOUR most pressing concern should be the lack of content (missing images) in the forum threads. I undestand that some of the content is 15+ years old, but that only reaffirms the need for reliable sources. For example.. Imgur is VERY popular right now, but they are a political mouthpiece, spreading horse manure. They won't be around for long. DeviantArt is a much bettter resource. I mean, ideally, Runboard or whatever service you use would host their own images. THAT would be ideal. Right now I advise you collect all original content that you want to keep and add it to your archive ASAP.

Off topic, I am seriously considering buying a domain and paying for a decade of service up front to host assets like these.

Speaking of the archive.. I'm currently sorting through it. It is a hot MESS. There are 2-3, and occasionally 4 or 5 copies of the same asset in there. The first few hundred of them were easy enough to sort. Currently I've gotten rid of most of the duplicates, but there are still around 130 resources left that are listed as being attributed to different authors, or as different types of ships altogether.. That are NOT so easy to sort out.

I intend to use the categories listed in the gallery (Bases, Capital Ships, Fighters..) to sort ALL of the assets down to ship designation, and then add extranious author, ship name, whatever information in to either subfolders or file names. Both options are going to suck and cost me time, but I don't see any other way around sorting it out.

I am currently sorting these items strictly for my own benefit. I started (downloaded the entire google drive folder) because I was looking for the original 'worksheets' and tables that listed the equipment which we used to build out the ships back in the day. I'd be more than happy to offer up a copy to the forum if they'd like to browse through it or do something else with it once I'm done with it.

While you're feeling frisky about it, I'd make one more suggestion. Create a resource to display any given ship images, listed by view type, along with the fields of information available for that ship. Then people can 'print to PDF' and get a copy of the ship and it's data to use in their personal RPG games.

Re: It's time to build

thank you for taking the time to comment on this crogonint.

I have already purchased a domain and they are capable of hosting all of our content without compression - to be fair, we have a pretty small data footprint.

I haven't gotten around to designing the site yet as I wanted to have help from more knowledgeable people than I in terms of aesthetics and implementation for categorization and ease of use for the user as well as cross platform utility. Considering that we are all hobbyists, I don't want to cross lines and suggest that people owe us anything, if that makes any sense.

As for the Google Drive archive. it is basically in two parts. One is partially combed of duplicates and the other is raw capture, but it is mostly unlabelled or difficult to categorize or identify some of the artists....sadly this will always be an issue unless people step forward to claim their work...that said, it's a HUGE job.

I was considering that we could migrate the content to to the new domain and keep everything consolidated there, and use tech like phpbb which is what the V2 forum was until it imploded back in 2014, I think.

If you are willing to help with this, I will be happy to discuss details with you. I think it would probably be easier to coordinate that via discord, if that works for you.

thanks again,
Lucas
