Sweet moogly googly - look at that thing. Even unfinished, this thing is gorgeous.

Re: YT-1300/Millennium Falcon WIP

well thank you for the kind words Lucas... that means I haven't strayed too far ...

I think I will write a "state of the Falcon" update to capture where my mind was going with this and what decisions were made and why... that will help re-orient myself on this and move forward... and give the SWDA community the ability to correct any mistakes I made or provide input now ...

I've reviewed the TLJ images and they are very nice... thanks Millenniumf1138!

But yeah I think the escape pods will have to eject somewhere else... but I'm not sure just yet.

also to find Gimp and try that program...

Re: YT-1300/Millennium Falcon WIP

So why is the Falcon a hard nut to crack… well this is why.. this is best and most accurate overlay I can find.. and his work is down to the rivets in the chairs. The inside is bigger than the outside.

Image

What got me to where I am now …

Overall length (35 m)… anything from 18 m to 40 m+ meters have been calculated and somewhere around 32-36 meters are middle calculations. The LFL official length is 34.75 m. I got ~35m by taking the known full scale cockpit set and applying that to different ILM models and getting around 35 m ± 3m depending on some of my estimates … so I set it at 35 m … its not much different from the now official length.. so I’m happy with it.

The donut or concentric circle main hallway… well why waist precious cargo space with multiple hallways? So it made sense to me that the intent was 1 main hallway that one could access the entire ship with.

Also I put the donut it in the middle of the ship as that makes the most sense to balance a wookie in the rafters, secret compartments, ramp to the cockpit and exit/egress ramp.

Image

Why do I place the chess table room in the middle forward … well its all about the rafters… they are straight. Front to back. In a circular ship the superstructure would in my mind radiate from a center point. If the chess room was off to the left the rafters should be moving diagonally left. (that assumes that the room is not rotated) Yes this image is a production maquette for RotJ (note the room above the left hallway) but you can clearly see how the rafters are set up... straight ...

Image

Also on every model there is a curious square shaped box on the mandible that seems to fit the dimension of the chess room… I really think that is a cue by the model makers…

Image

Compromises… sadly there were a few…

Image

Extend hallway to gun well… there are lots of fixes to this… but I wanted to try to stay as close to what we see in the film… so its straight and narrows and longer so it as close to what we see on the film possible.

The two stage egress ramp… stairs and a partial ramp… am I mad!?!?!? There is no visual evidence for this … alas no.. there have been several attempts to fix the on screen ramp to the gunwell… but I opted for what I did… the movie clearly shows one ramp to the main hallway.. while I’ve seen clever fixes with stairwell idea and faux hallway first stage.. I just thought it was simpler to have a small ramp to stairs.. not what we see but it works.

Image

The cockpit sits a little higher than it should … in every model and set the cockpit hallway outer hull has very small bit that intersects the bottom of the ship.. mine sits right the edge … what happened… well its how my hull thickness worked out … that’s it…. I think I’m 2 pixels higher than it should be … but if I drop it down the upper part will tilt down and that really doesn’t look right at all .. so I think this is okay and no seems bothered or notices it … it bugs me.. but it is what is…

Image

The Unknown regions….

The sleeping quarters… Forward starboard section?!?!? What the heck is wrong with me.. I’m bucking convention left and right… I’m mad with power…

So why did put it there rather than aft port like other plans?

Image

Image

Firstly … I tried to put all the living, rec stuff and plumbing near each other… so its near the chess room.
Secondly … who want to sleep next to the engine room? The captain is now closer to the cockpit while sleeping or relaxing
Thirdly, why does Lando bring Luke to the cockpit in ESB? Besides plot and viewer convenience… maybe the bunks are close by and on the way to the cockpit?
Fourth, earlier blueprints showed the bunks there… with a weird door that gives access to cockpit hallway…
Fifth, I broke no visual canon… so there… I got nothing else…

The Escape pods… with TLJ that blows what I have now… so I’ll be fixing this but here were my thoughts prior to that movie.. “Where the heck are they and how can that ship contain “several” escape pods… oh man… seriously…

While there are a myriad of excuses.. Han has fake logs, the pods are tiny 1 man death spheres, … and now they are literally coffin looking…

So why did I have them in the front three exhaust circles? Well I had no where else to put them… an escape pod as depicted in all films were dedicated systems.. and I did not think the port/starboard docking rings would have a dual purpose (too much failure risk for a life saving system)

Also there was that scene in ESB with that tube connecting the medical frigate to the falcon.. just a power/fueling line or was that how Lando and Chewie were accessing the Falcon? If the later was that a MacGyver like use of the escape pod tubes?? I could easily still have cooling properties to the vents but it’s a nice place for escape pods too… just thought…

Image

Do you guys have any suggestions or other questions?

The future...

the escape pods ... I'll set up the internal deckplan to match what we see in TLJ... the image is one that I found of the the artists site... Its referenced in the picture and is accurate to what we see in the film... I do believe there is set construction photos putting it in the aft starboard quarter... I'll have to look for it.. but this how I'll try to make it look.

Image

That's where I left off at... any questions, comments, suggestions ... fire away!

Looking great and nice to see that you have put so much thought into the design of the ship.

I just had a thought though...what if the hallway leading to the cockpit is actually at a slight upward angle, meaning that the central donut is lower in the hull rather than dead centre, which causes a number of issues. I am wondering if it's possible to examine the possibility of an angled hallway.

I don't recall anyone trying that approach, and it might resolve several issues, such as the non intersecting cockpit with the hull, and the ramp orientation. I am just spit balling here. the MF is a weird ass ship and the production of model with set were not handled in a way congruent with effective communication between the teams...but I digress. Keep up the fantastic work. The amount of analysis and pixel wrangling you've done on this project is astounding!

Lucas, I think I did what your suggesting... as I have it drawn it does have a 10-13 degree angle...

Unless I misunderstand what you're saying...

Image

If I set the central ring lower the angel gets really steep... its really the egress ramp that causes the most issues... as made by the set crew it leads straight to the gun well.

I'm not clever... its just how it has to work for the Falcon to try to work...

So I've been scanning the interwebs for images on where I can put the escape pod egress ...

and I think I found a place that I can make work while holding to what we see on screen... not including TLJ... sorry the TLJ route passes right where the landing gear are... so that is out...

any ways.. here are some model details that I can use as bulkhead door for the pods to eject from ...

Image

and this is the Deagostini model that is pretty accurate so.. for clarity...

Image

any thoughts...

hmm, that wall section of the ship appears to be about (judging by mk 1 eyeball without measuring) 1 metre and a bit. Is that enough room for a person to be able to enter the pod and eject? perhaps the occupant lies down in the pod (either head first or feet first - feet first would probably be preferable if you swing into into it). According to schematics, what is behind that wall section? is it engine or fuel stuff? have the proper considerations for interior space been given in your analysis - the rpg's don't consider this and appear to use all interior space as livable, which is made of the dumb....

Re: YT-1300/Millennium Falcon WIP

So currently, i have nothing in place in the area of my deckplan.

If i follow the TLJ internals to some degree, yes. The person lies down in a coffin like pod and is ejected out... feet first.

I have updated my deckplans and removed the soda can like pods i had... i haven't posted that yet. Im happy with what i have to work with. Otherwise id have to make my own hole in the ship. I think this will work eyeballing my starboard view.. so its something to work with and has film consistency...
