Re: Star Wars Battlefront II

A friend of mine has given it to me for the PC. I have been playing it on my laptop, and it is quite hard even on the easy levels. I need to get a game pad and/or mouse for it I think. Useing the touchpad and minimal keys is hindering me.

Yeah, they say its compatable with gamepads, and joysticks, but what they don't tell you is that you have to assign the buttons and axes functions. I had problems with the gamepad. It didn't manipulate the characters motions as well as games like GTA does.
Maybe I'll have to tweak it a little more. I like the fact that you can set up different controls for on foot, vehicles, Jedi, and starfighters. I can use my joystick quite well.

I especially like the Assault instance action with Heros vs Villains. Where else can you battle the Emperor, Maul, Dooku, Vader, and Anakin at the same time. And not just one, but sometimes two of the same character.

I am really suckin' using the Jedi.

But I am doing pretty good using the Standard Trooper, Heavy Trooper, Pilot/Engineer and the Commander.

I am having a heck of a problem doing the Kashyyk mission - space battles are just vicious for me. I need a cheat with invulnerability :P

Ah, that damned Kashyyyk space battle.

The trick is to get under or behind the banking clan ships where the auto-turrets can't hit you. I take the ARC-170 as soon as the mission starts because its slow. It never respawns either so I figured that's a clue.
I have my joystick configured so that one button is for Trick and another for Immelmen (sp). When missiles are heading your way the Trick gets you clear.
I get up close and personal to the engines and blast away until it done.
Once that objective is met, you get a regen boost so your ship damage is repaired faster as you go after the turrent flanking the hanger bay of the other ship.

But I haven't beat it yet. You have to land the LAAT in the enemy hanger, get out, and destroy some life-support equipment admist a large number of rapidly respawning stupid battle droids.

I got through all the ships... it is those damn turrets that are getting me. I think the key is to hit them from the side. I just can't hover and do the same thing as you do with the engines.

I personally go to the side or the top of the ships, as you can see what is going on a bit mroe. but it is still a pain...

I tried rolling so that the edge of the ship is below me and I hit them from "above". That way they can't shoot at you.
It's a tough one. But I'm not going to bypass it.

Firstly IMHO, first person shooters are simply not meant for gamepads period. It requires the 'helper' auto-target feature also, so all ya gotta do is fire in the 'general direction' near the target your after to hit... little to no skill needed there...

The game in first person mode is best played with keyboard and mouse combo, (best formula for all 1st person shooters). Up & down for movement, left & right for strafe, and mouse controls your turning and aiming. So the laptop isn't a problem as long as you use a mouse.

and a decent joystick with twist handle rudder axis for the flight sim portion of it, which is more arcade than anything else. A nitpick i found is i had to assign the axis values for the handle-twist manually, as using the actual axis didnt want to work. just one of the game's many bugs needing patched.

I thoroughly detest the 2 'trick' buttons. its not realistic how the maneuvers basically zing the fighter back and forth as if on the end of a rubber string. Also removes alot of the skill in dogfighting that the xwing games had.

for landing inside the enemy hanger - it helps if you land the thing close as possible to the stairs leading to the interior operations area. Try to duck and run to the nearest side door without confronting too much opposition, destroy the ceiling auto-canons if any present, use 2 det charges per item, go back to the Gonk power droid for restock on the charges and go back at it...

You dont need to take the LAA/T to land in the enemy hanger, can just land your fighter there, and also you can ditch your craft and steal one of the enemy's fighters...

You can bring troops with you using the LAA/T.

Trouble is they are utterly useless (and one of them always gets back in the ship and rams it into wall).

It was not certain what significance the ceremony held... but the formality was no less sacred for it being unintelligible.

now the jedi temple is kicking my ass. I saved the bookcases once, now I can't. I hate when that happens.
